As part of the 5P Global Movement’s 5P Village pillar, we partnered with the ECCO Foundation, a non-profit organization in Lombok, Indonesia, to renovate the village community center in Genggelang. The Community Center is a central hub for a village, serving as a space for social interactions, community activities, and government functions. Our collaboration aimed to create a gathering place for the villagers to hold meetings, youth activities, and even weddings.
A Heartwarming Transformation
The renovation involved repairing the ceiling, repainting, and replacing worn-out materials. The weeks-long process went beyond physical improvements; it ignited a new spirit within the community. Initially passive observers, villagers gradually became actively involved. Some helped clear debris, while others volunteered to paint the walls. One afternoon, as the paint dried, the village youth gathered in the hall’s courtyard. They discussed how to utilize the newly renovated space. Ideas ranged from hosting skill-building workshops to creating a communal study area. Their collaborative spirit and enthusiasm were unique.
A Rewarding Outcome
After overcoming challenges and working together, the Genggelang Village community center renovation was completed. The once gray and outdated hall transformed into a clean, bright, and inviting space. The new ceiling made the room feel more spacious, and the fresh coat of paint added a vibrant touch. The renovation’s impact extended beyond the physical structure; it fostered a positive community atmosphere. The upgraded community center became a hub for increased community activities, including skill-building workshops, youth events, and regular village meetings. Moreover, the renovation enhanced the villagers’ sense of ownership and care for their surroundings. They felt a greater pride in their village and were motivated to maintain and protect their public facilities.
Valuable Lessons
The collaboration between the 5P Global Movement, ECCO Foundation, and Genggelang Village residents in renovating the village hall provided valuable lessons. Strong partnerships and synergy can lead to significant change. Furthermore, active community participation is crucial for ensuring the sustainability of development projects. The Genggelang Village community center renovation story demonstrates that with a little care and cooperation, we can create positive change in our communities. Hopefully, this story will inspire others to contribute to building thriving villages in Indonesia.
